This wasn’t a workout... but it was fitness

Hey Reader,

This past weekend, I squeezed in a quick beach trip with my husband and kids. It was our first real beach weekend in four years. Somehow the stars aligned a last-minute kennel opening for the dogs, and a beach house just a mile from the shore opened up on the only free weekend left this summer.

If you’ve been here a while, you’ve probably heard me say: there are some vacations you train through, and others you just live through. I help my clients figure out the difference and build that right into their plans.

This weekend? It was a planned rest week. However, I want to discuss the aspect of fitness that is often overlooked: the movement that doesn’t take place in the gym.

I’m talking about pulling a wagon full of beach gear for a mile (both ways), wearing chairs on our backs, dodging traffic, and still saying yes to post-beach ice cream because it was hot and mostly because ice cream is SOOO good! Or hopping on a bike for a spontaneous family ride. Or running easy loops around the beach town before everyone else wakes up, not for the pace, not for the data, just to move and explore.

None of this was tracked. None of it was “logged” in an app. But it all counts.

This is something I often tell my clients, especially busy moms who are juggling it all and think their movement only matters if it’s on a schedule.

Yard work counts. Cleaning out a room counts. A spontaneous hike or chasing your kid on a scooter counts. Movement doesn’t have to be complicated to matter.

Fitness isn’t just something we train for; it’s something we use in real life.

Now, I'd like to hear from you.
What movement did you do this weekend that didn’t “count” but felt really good?

Reply and let me know. I read every message.

With gratitude,

Kat
